It was another night and another restaurant. The sameness pervaded, and I was living inside my own private party when a disturbance in the front of the bar caused me to look up and there was James. He would have been unable to stand had he not been leaning on a three-day-old binge of a groupie who’d probably heard about Jack Hunter and thought she could get to him through James. The maître d’ was looking worried at such a tequilaed and tuinalled pair, and I felt sorry for the maître d’, who I knew, so went over.

“Hi,” James said just barely.

“Jesus Christ, James.” I suddenly flew into such a rage that I wanted to beat the shit out of him. “Can’t you the fuck . . . Look at you!” My mother’s childhood songs sound like a Southern Cop drunk. “What the fuck would your family . . . your father think?”

I so shocked myself with that admission of fantasy that I fell back amazed as James squinted through his drugs and looked at me with his beautiful eyes.

“My father,” he pronounced softly, just for me, “died in jail drunk.”

“What?”

“Haven’t you ever heard of Jackson Ryan? He was just about as good as Hank Williams. Some thought he was better. Anyway . . .”

He forgot what he was saying; he was always doing that now.

“But what about those pictures and the silver frames with the roses . . .?”

“That wasn’t our money, that was their money,” he explained tortuously. “Once . . . my father died, we were poor, you know? Poor? My mother got married and . . . It’s always been their money.”
